Hair Loss

Peace and Blessings people. This month we are going to focus on hair loss. What is it? Who has it? Is there something that can be done about it? All burning questions that will be answered.

Hair loss is categorized by hair that falls out and never returns or shedding more hair than normal on a daily basis. Our hair goes through 3 stages; Anagen- the budding or production and sprouting of the hair from the follicle. Catagen- The hair root shrinks away from the follicle and gets ready to leave or shed from the scalp. Telogen- The resting stage where the hair follicle regroups to start all over again. This cycle happens in different stages throughout your entire head. We are to shed 100 hairs per day. It seems like a lot but with the strands that we have its normal. 85% of the hair is in the anagen/growth stage, while 14% is in the telogen/resting stage and the other 1% is in the catagen phase. This cycle goes on and on throughout your life in your hair. There are also reasons for hair loss. Everyone can experience hair loss at times in their lives.

Alopecia-the partial or complete absence of hair from areas of the body where it normally grows; baldness. Alopecia can happen to anyone there are also different types of alopecia that you can obtain from wearing a ponytail too tight, to having a child. (We will discuss the different types throughout the month.)

This week we will start with a simple recipe to get your follicles stimulated and a small list of foods to consume to assist with hair growth.

Ingredients: 1oz each Coconut, Olive, Castor, Almond oil, 6 drops each Lavender, Thyme (white), Cedarwood Atlas and Rosemary essential oils, 1 PET or dark amber bottle with lid. (Spray or dropper is your choice) Optional: Dried Lavender or Rosemary leaves. (These will have to sit in your formula for 1 month before using)

Directions: Place essential oils in bottle first. Swirl around. Add oils to bottle and place lid on. Fold oils together gently. Store in a cool dark place away from sunlight. (If using the dried leaves place leaves down first and then essential oil.)

To Use: Apply to scalp in cross sections and to the hair as well. Massage into the scalp for 10 to 15 minutes. Leave in overnight and shampoo out the next morning. Use a gentle and sulfate and alcohol free shampoo and conditioner.

For daily use: Apply to the scalp in drops and massage in. Use 10 to 15 drops on the hair. For short hair use 5 to 8 drops.

As a hot Oil treatment: Place the bottle in warm/hot water. Not boiled. Massage into the scalp for 10 to 15 minutes. Place a shower cap on the head and sit under a warm dryer for an additional 10 minutes. Leave in overnight and shampoo out the next morning. Use a gentle and sulfate and alcohol free shampoo and conditioner.

Food Tip: When experiencing hair loss vitamins missing from the body is iron, zinc, omega 6, A, B7, B12, D2 and E. Foods to consume are green leafy vegetables (ex. spinach, char, kale, cabbage etc.), red, yellow and orange fruits and vegetables (peppers, oranges, banana, squash etc.), and lastly beans and other legumes (kidney, black eyed peas, lentil etc.)
